FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES

Acute Injuries:

What is it?
Signs & Symptoms
Treatment
Turf Toe
Occurs when your big toe bends beyond a normal range of motion, which is caused by 'sliding' within your shoe.
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • "Buddy Tape" (When the big toe is taped to the toe beside it)
Sprained Ankle
Occurs as a result of body weight pushing down on the ligaments, which support the ankle. A majority of the time, inversion sprains are to occur which means the sole of the foot faces the medial side. When this happens the ligaments on the lateral side are impacted.
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • RICE (used for 1st and 2nd degree sprains)
  • Medical treatment required for third degree sprains.
Ankle Strain
Occurs when the tendons in the foot become inflamed. The peroneal tendons are frequently impacted when a strain in the ankle region occurs.
  • Pain
  • Discoloration
  • Difficulty walking
  • RICE

Chronic Injuries:

What is it?
Signs & Symptoms
Treatment
Achilles Tendonitis
Inflammation of the achilles tendon.
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Swelling just above the heel
  • RICE
Heel (Retrocalcaneal) Bursitis
When the fluid filled sac (bursa), between the calcaneus and achilles tendon becomes inflammed.
  • Similar to Achilles Tendonitis
  • RICE
Plantar Fasciitis
When the plantar fascia, that runs on the plantar side of foot from the toes to the heel becomes inflammed.
  • Sharp pain on the plantar side of the heel
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Stretching
  • RICE
Stress Fracture
Is a small fracture that forms over time, due to repetitive stress.
  • Pain
  • Redness and swelling around metatarsals
  • High pain levels that are caused by pressure being applied on the dorsal side of the foot, above the metatarsals
  • Rest (could take weeks depending on severity)
Heel Spurs
When tight ligaments above the calcaneus cause abnormal bone growth, on top of an existing bone.
  • A physical or painful bump, under or at the back of an athletes heel
  • Stretching to loosen ligaments
  • Rest from activity

TAPE JOBS

The following tape jobs are used to treat injuries that occur at the ankle or foot:

  • Closed Basket Weave - The purpose of this tape job is to give the ankle extra support and stability. It is used to prevent the ankle from lateral sprains, since that is the most common type of injury.

  • Open Basket Weave - The purpose of this tape job is to control swelling for an acute ankle injury (immediate treatment for a sprained ankle). It is used for the support of the ankle while it is swelling.

  • Achilles Tendon - The purpose of this tape job is to reduce force on the achilles tendon and it helps prevent the tendon from over stretching. This tape job can also be used to treat a total rupture of the tendon when the athlete begins to start walking again. It limits dorsiflexion of the foot and stretching of the achilles.

  • Arch Technique - The purpose of this tape job is to treat many lower leg and foot problems. It helps reduce discomfort and helps strengthen the muscles of the foot. This tape job raises the fallen arch and acts as an arch support.
