ACUTE INJURIES

Strains, sprains, bruises, fractures and dislocations are the most common types of acute injuries that are to occur in the elbow/arm. If a persons elbow gets bruised, they could be encountering a small blood vessel rupture. One of the main acute injuries which occurs most often is an elbow hyper extension. Listed below are some common acute injuries athletes may encounter.

Injuries

Signs & Symptoms
Treatment
Elbow Hyperextension
This injury occurs when an individuals elbow joint ends up being bent beyond its normal range of motion. Ligaments and bones located inside a persons elbow can be damaged by this injury, and the elbow may also dislocate.
  • A popping sound
  • Stiffness in your elbow and arm
  • Loss of strength in the elbow and arm
  • Pain when you touch your elbow
  • Dull to sharp pain when you move your elbow
  • Swelling around the injures elbow
  • Muscle spasms in your biceps when you try to straighten your arm
  • R.I.C.E
Muscle Strains
An overstretched or torn muscle or tendon.
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Reduced range of motion
  • First and second degree strains can be treated with R.I.C.E
  • Third degree strains require medical treatment
Ligament Sprains
An overstretched or torn ligament.
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Reduced range of motion
  • First and second degree sprains can be treated with R.I.C.E
  • Third degree sprains require medical treatment
Fractures
A break in the bone; Fractures often occur at the distal end of the humerus, or the proximal end of the ulna or radius.
  • Severe pain
  • Deformity
  • Swelling
  • Immediate medical treatment
Dislocation
When one or more of the bones that make up the elbow joint become dislodged.
  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Inability to properly bend the arm
  • Immediate medical treatment

Medial Epicondylitis is caused by overuse and it is inflammation or tearing of the tendons, which attach on the medial side of the elbow.
  • Soreness felt on the medial side (inside) of the arm.

TAPE JOBS

Purpose

Elbow Hyperextension
This tape job is used in order to reduce the chances of an athlete re-injuring a previously hyper-extended elbow.

Epicondylitis
This tape job is used in order to help reduce pain by compressing the tendons which have become inflamed, that surround the epicondyle.
