KNEE AND LEG INJURIES

Acute Injuries:

What is it?Signs & SymptomsTreatment
ACL SprainThe anterior cruciate ligament can be injured by quick direction changes, sudden stopping, incorrectly landing or by direct blow.
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Lots of motion
  • Depending on severity, treatment can range from rest and rehabilitation to bracing or surgery.
PCL SprainThe posterior cruciate ligament is often injured when an athlete falls on a bent knee.
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Discomfort
  • Difficulty walking
  • Depending on severity, treatment can range from RICE to surgery.
LCL SprainLCL sprains occur when the knee is forced medially. These types of sprains only account for about 2% of all knee injuries.
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Discomfort
  • Depending on severity, treatment can range from RICE to surgery.
MCL SprainMCL sprains occur when the knee is forced laterally.
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Discomfort
  • Depending on severity, treatment can range from RICE to surgery.

Meniscus
 Injuries
One of the most common injuries in the knee are meniscus injuries. The meniscus is cartilage located in the knee, which acts to cushion and stabilize the knee. Meniscus injuries are common in contact sports, or sports that require a lot of jumping or quick cuts.
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • A popping sound
  • A tendency for your knee to lock up
  • Treatment depends on the location and the size of the tear. Tears tend to heal on their own if they happen on the outer layer of the meniscus. But if the tear happens in the inner-portion, surgery can be required, since healing doesn't tend to take place on its own in the inner layer. If a tear doesnt require surgery it can be treated with RICE and anti-inflammatory medications.
DislocationDislocations indicate that the bones that make up a joint have moved out of place. In the knee, dislocations may occur in sports following a hard collision with another athlete or a hard fall.
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Visible deformity
  • The athlete will need to be seen by a doctor
  • Need to be very careful while trying to move an athlete with a dislocated knee
  • An ambulance may need to be called
FracturesThe patella is the most commonly fractured bone around the knee. However, fractures to the distal end of the femur or proximal head of the tibia can also be fractured.
  • Deformity as a result of broken shards of bone
  • Severe pain around the patella
  • Difficulty moving leg
  • Normally require surgery, in which they will surgically piece the bone fragments back together for healing to take place.

Chronic Injuries:

Chronic injuries often result from acute injuries, since they can lead to long-term knee pain. A treatment which is used for chronic and severe knee pain is a knee replacement surgery. The following video explains what happens in a knee replacement surgery: https://www.arthritis-health.com/video/knee-replacement-surgery-video#vm_A_78706f97

TAPE JOBS:

The following tape jobs are used to treat injuries that occur at the knee or leg:

  • Knee Hyper-extension - The purpose of this tape job is to support a hyper-extended knee or to prevent hyper-extension of the knee. This tape job supports and restricts movement of the knee towards the posterior side of the body.

  • Shin splints - This tape job is used when an athlete feels pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). The purpose of this tape job is to help relieve the pressure and strain on the tissue, as well as relax the muscles of the shin. This tape job also helps prevent inflammation.
